about

Groundlines (manu) composed by John Serry in 2009 was brought to life by a large consortium of players that included: Kyle Ancuncius, Thad Anderson, Michael Burritt, Thomas Burritt, Gwen Burgett, Candy Chiu, Sean Connors, John Corkill, Kevin Dufford, Gregg Giannascoli, Brian Graiser, Adam Groh, Barrett Hipes, Ji Hye Jung, Kuniko Kato, William Moersch, Ian Rosenbaum, Jeff Sass, Robert Van Sice and Mike Zell. A long awaited follow up to his epic “Night Rhapsody” (1979), Groundlines delivers much of the technical flare of Rhapsody but in a thinner dualistic texture. Set in a pseudo Sonata Rondo form, following an eight bar introduction, themes A, B, and C alternate their way until a long codetta brings the first main section to a halt. One similar trait to Rhapsody is the lengthy, extended development section that follows. Serry hurls continuous related musical ideas ever building to an ebullient return to the other side of the form. An extended Coda brings the work to a sudden and powerful end. Unlike Rhapsody, a nod to the musical past (sonata form, Dies Irae theme) is all but absent in Groundlines leaving the listener more exposed to Serry’s pure mechanical compositional approach. Mallets Used: Malletech CN9 in mallet slot 1, 3 Malletech CN 14’s in mallet slot 2-4.
